When you register you must choose your start 'wave'.
What's the difference?
With a Mass Start, everyone in your wave starts together on a signal, creating a traditional race atmosphere. With a Rolling Start, you enter the water at your own pace, and your individual race time begins as you cross the timing mat.
MASS (COMPETITIVE) START
Each distance has a limited number of places available for the Mass Start.
Swimmers taking part in the Mass Start will be called down to the start pontoon together. Once in the water, you'll make your way towards the start line and wait for everyone in your wave to get into position.
You'll need to tread water while waiting for the start signal. The Start Marshal will then give a countdown, and everyone in your wave will set off at the same time.
Your race time begins when the Mass Start signal is given.
ROLLING (RELAXED) START
Each distance has a designated start window, giving you the flexibility to begin your swim at your own pace.
Swimmers will queue near the start area before making their way down the entry ramp and onto the start pontoon, during the start window.
You'll then enter the water individually or in small groups, rather than everyone starting together.
Your race time begins when you cross the timing mats on the start pontoon, so there's no need to rush or worry about swimmers ahead of you.
Swimming with friends or family? Simply queue together during your designated start window and enter the water together. You can enjoy the experience at your own pace.
Example: The 5k distance has a start window from 0900-0945. You can make your way to the start area and line up at 0900 or you can hang back and wait until closer to 0945 when it will likely be less congested in the start area. You will just need to make sure that you have crossed the pontoon timing mat and entered the water by 0945.
** note the timings above are an example only. The official start times will be published closer to the event.
